MySpace Names New Chief Privacy Officer

Social Media privacy has been the center of much attention, particularly since Facebook announced its plans to take over the web. MySpace, once considered Facebook’s chief rival, has just announced that it has a new Chief Privacy Officer.

A MySpace representative tells WebProNews Jennifer Mardosz will be assuming the role effective immediately. She’s been with the company since 2007, in the role of Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs. Since that time, she has led the company’s the company’s global Law Enforcement program. She has also played a key role in advising the company on safety, security and privacy issues.

Social Networks Said To Account For 60% Of Mobile Web Usage

There’s good news for social networks – and perhaps MySpace in particular – this week courtesy of Ground Truth.  The mobile measurement firm has determined that almost 60 percent of the time people spend online using a cell phone is dedicated to social networks, and that MySpace is ahead of Facebook in many respects.

Let’s start with the basics.  Ground Truth’s stats indicate that 59.83 percent of "time spent on mobile Internet usage" is committed to social networks.  The runner-up is then the "portals" category, consuming 13.65 percent of time spent, while "operator," "messaging," and "mobile downloads" trail further behind.

MySpace Launches Global Events And Calendar Platform

MySpace has introduced a global events and calendar offering users new tools to create, find, share and manage events across the site and multiple social networks.

MySpace Events organizes a catalogue of pop culture events and recommends concerts, sports, nightlife and the arts, allowing users to purchase tickets to events.

"Our users already post millions of events to MySpace each year and the events platform is the next step in enabling them to discover, create, and socialize around the events that are most relevant to them," said Jason Hirschhorn, co-president of MySpace.

UK Kids Ignoring Facebook Age Limits

A quarter of children in the UK aged 8-12 who use the Internet at home say they have a profile on Facebook, Bebo or MySpace, although the minimum age is 13, according to new research from communications regulator Ofcom.

The majority (83%) of these children have their profile set so it can only be seen by friends, and 4 percent have a profile that can’t be seen. Parents of these children who are aware that their child visits social networking sites (93%) also say they check on what their child is doing on such sites.  However one in six (17 per cent) parents of this group are not aware that their child visits social networking sites.
